St. Augustine Prep's fencing team competed in the Spring Invitational Tournament
in Richland on Saturday, along with fencing teams from Bridgeton and Cumberland Regional high schools, and a team
from the Cumberland County College community education course.
Bridgeton senior Samantha Brewer took first place in the Foil division. Brewer, a left-handed fencer, finished
8-0 in her division and defended her title from the Fall Invitational Tournament last December.
St. Augustine sophomore co-captain Adam Meiswinkel took second place in the Foil division with a 6-1 record, his
only loss to Brewer. Meiswinkel finished 19-5 for the season.
Senior co-captain Joe Scarpinato took first place in the Sabre division for the Hermits. Scarpinato, in his first
year finished 30-5 and plans to continue fencing at Seton Hall University next year. "I'm very impressed with
Joe (Scarpinato) this year. He just started in December, it will be hard to replace him as co-captain," coach
Bill Olivero said.
In the Epee division, Steve Smith took first place for the Hermits. Smith finished with a 3-1 record in his division,
and 20-19 on the season. |
